Saying it was a tough call, Sun Gazette Newspapers has endorsed Republican Barbara Comstock for re-election in the 10th District.
While acknowledging that Democrat Jennifer Wexton is worthy of a serious look from voters, the newspaper said she and Democrats had been unable to say – beyond generalities – what Comstock had done while in office to merit her removal.
“When this race began in earnest over the summer, we were leaning Wexton,” the newspaper noted. “But in the intervening period she’s been underwhelming – neither her campaign advertising nor her stump appearances has showcased the depth that we suspect Wexton has.”
“Had she been more aggressively specific in trying to seal the deal, we well might have endorsed her,” the newspaper noted. “But Wexton has not yet made the case.”
Comstock also would strike a balance in a regional delegation that includes Democrats Don Beyer in the 8th District and Gerald Connolly in the 11th District, the newspaper said. The Sun Gazette has endorsed Beyer and Connolly in what are mostly pro-forma re-election bids in solidly Democratic districts.
The endorsement of Comstock is not necessarily a surprise; the Sun Gazette supported her in her successful bids for Congress in 2014 and 2016.
